What is a good FFMI?

For men, a fat-free mass index around 18 to 20 is average, the low 20s is well-trained, and about 25 is the natural ceiling most drug-free lifters reach. Women run a few points lower on the same scale. Values much above 25 for men usually point to exceptional genetics or performance-enhancing drugs.

What FFMI measures

Fat-free mass index (FFMI) is your lean mass divided by your height squared, then normalized to a standard height so people of different sizes compare fairly. In plain terms, it answers "how much muscle do you carry for your frame?", independent of body fat. That is what makes it a better muscularity gauge than BMI.

What counts as a good FFMI

Here is where the normalized number lands, by category:

The natural ceiling near 25

In large surveys of drug-free athletes, normalized FFMI tops out around 25 for men. A handful of genetic outliers edge past it, but a sustained value well above 25, especially paired with low body fat, is uncommon without assistance. Treat 25 as a realistic long-term goal, not a starting expectation, most lifters spend years getting from the high teens into the low 20s.

FFMI vs BMI

BMI only knows your height and weight, so a lean, muscular person often gets labelled overweight. FFMI fixes that by using your fat-free mass instead of total weight. To find yours, you need your body-fat percentage first, estimate it with the body fat calculator, then run the FFMI calculator to see where you fall on the table above.

What is a good FFMI for a man?
Around 18 to 20 is average, the low 20s is well-trained, and about 25 is the natural ceiling most drug-free lifters reach. An FFMI much above 25 usually points to exceptional genetics or performance-enhancing drugs.
What is a good FFMI for a woman?
Women run a few points lower on the same scale: roughly 14 to 15 is average, the high teens is well-trained, and the low 20s is exceptional. The categories track the male ones, shifted down.
Is FFMI 25 the natural limit?
For most drug-free men, yes, roughly. A normalized FFMI around 25 is the rough upper bound seen in large surveys of natural athletes. A few outliers with excellent genetics go slightly higher, but sustained values well above it are uncommon without help.
Is FFMI better than BMI?
For muscularity, yes. BMI counts muscle as if it were fat, so lean, muscular people get flagged as overweight. FFMI separates muscle from fat, which makes it a far better gauge of how much muscle you carry.
