What is a good AFT score?

A good Army Fitness Test score is generally 450 or above out of 500. 300 is the passing minimum, but it is only the floor, so most soldiers aim for the high 400s. A perfect score is 500, which is 100 points in all five events.

The scale, from pass to perfect

The AFT scores five events from 0 to 100 points each, for a maximum of 500. Where your total lands tells you a lot more than a simple pass or fail.

Total (out of 500)What it means
300Passing minimum (with at least 60 in every event)
350–449Solid, comfortably clear of the line
450–499Strong, competitive for promotion points
500Perfect, 100 in all five events

Why 300 is not really “good”

300 is the number that keeps you in, not the number that stands out. It also carries no margin: the fastest way to fail the AFT is a single event under 60, so a soldier sitting right on 300 is one bad rep or slow run from failing. Aim high enough that one off event still leaves you passing comfortably.

What a good score looks like per event

The floor is 60 points in each of the five events. A genuinely good score means clearing 80 in most events, which puts your total in the 400s. Chasing 100 in your two strongest events while holding 70 to 80 in the rest is a realistic route to a strong total. To see exactly which events are carrying you and which are holding you back, run your numbers through the AFT calculator.

Good for promotion and combat roles

Higher AFT totals feed into promotion points, so a score in the high 400s helps you compete. Soldiers in designated combat roles also face a stricter, sex-neutral minimum instead of the general 300, so if that applies to you, treat the high 400s as the target rather than a stretch goal. For the exact marks behind each score, see the AFT score chart, and for how the points are built, see how the AFT is scored.

What is a good AFT score?
A good Army Fitness Test score is generally 450 or above out of 500. 300 is the passing minimum, but it leaves no margin, so most soldiers aim for the high 400s. A perfect score is 500, which is 100 points in all five events.
Is 300 a good AFT score?
300 is the passing minimum, not a good score. It means you barely cleared the line, and a single weak event on test day would fail you. Treat 300 as the floor and aim well above it.
What AFT score do I need to be competitive?
For promotion points and standing out, aim for 450 and up. Strong soldiers routinely score in the high 400s, and combat roles carry a higher, sex-neutral minimum than the general 300.
What is the maximum AFT score?
500 points, which is 100 in every one of the five events. Very few soldiers max every event, so 450 to 500 is the strong range.
